Su Fern Hoe, PhDSenior Research Advisor, Global Cultural Districts Network, Singapore
Su Fern oversees the research portfolio for the Global Cultural Districts Network (GCDN).
She is an arts researcher, educator and advocate based in Singapore. She holds a PhD in Culture and Communication from The University of Melbourne, Australia. She has spoken, researched and published widely on arts and cultural policy, urban cultural economies, placemaking and the conditions of artistic and cultural production. She has a wealth of experience in managing, coordinating and/or developing local, regional and global projects in varying formats; all of which advocate for the value of the arts and culture in urban environments, including a transregional project on culture and the smart city.
Su Fern is deeply involved in the local arts ecosystem in Singapore, particularly ground-up initiatives to enable greater collectivity and solidarity in the arts. Her practice is informed by her pursuit for practice-oriented and engaged arts research and her interest in enhancing research impact beyond academia, particularly through the power of the arts and culture to enable better working conditions, catalyze dialogue and bridge differences.
Su Fern is currently Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the Arts and Culture Management Programme at the Singapore Management University. She is also on the board of Dance Nucleus, an intermediary for independent contemporary performance based in Singapore.
She has previously held professional appointments at The Institute of Policy Studies, Ministry of Communications and Information and The Supreme Court in Singapore. She is fluent in both English and Chinese Mandarin, and has strong research, writing and project management skills.
