Christos Carras

Senior Associate, Athens, Greece

Christos Carras is Executive Director of the Dinos and Lia Martinos Foundation, where he leads the development of KYKLOS Centre for Arts and Cultures, a new arts centre in Athens designed by Renzo Piano dedicated to historic and contemporary art from Africa, Oceania, and other regions of the Global South. Since 2022, he has also worked with AEA Consulting as a Senior Associate, where engagements have included the development of a Sustainability Strategy for arts organisations, projects for the Getty Foundation, and the strategic refocusing of the Cambodian Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts’ cultural heritage strategy. He has also served as a strategy advisor to the Global Cultural Districts Network since 2023. His professional focus areas include strategic planning, sustainability, inclusion and access, collection management — including strategies for the responsible stewardship of collections formed during the colonial period — and governance for arts and cultural organisations.

Prior to this, Christos was Executive Director of the Onassis Cultural Centre (Onassis Stegi) from 2009 to 2022, giving prominent place to the presentation of Greek artists, performers, and writers within an international programme, with social impact at the heart of its concerns. Earlier, he was the first General Manager of the B & M Theocharakis Foundation for the Fine Arts and Music (from 2006) and Project Manager of the EU co-funded MediMuses, a network of music institutions from around the Mediterranean (2002–2005). Before entering the cultural sector in 2000, his professional activities centred on fine wine and organic traditional food; in 1997 he co-founded the Wine Roads of Northern Greece, the country’s first and still most successful network of producers with an integrated wine and tourism offering.

Christos is also an active independent researcher and writer on cultural policy. In 2023 he was lead author and coordinator of DiaNEOsis’ in-depth study of the Greek cultural sector, and in 2024 he edited the Handbook of Cultural Work, published by Bloomsbury Visual Arts.

Christos studied philosophy at Cambridge University and earned his PhD from the University of Paris I — Sorbonne (1989), with a focus on aesthetics; during this time he also worked as a musician and teacher in jazz and improvisation. In 2013 he was awarded the grade of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture. He is fluent in English, Greek, and French, and also speaks Italian and German.
