In 2008, AEA worked on The Aspen Institute's landmark report, National Study of Artist-Endowed Foundations, the first in-depth examination of private foundations created in the US by visual artists, published in 2010.

AEA undertook primary research on IRS data to identify and build a database of foundations endowed by individual artists. The study was updated in 2013.
